Caring for our Health Care Providers

This is an official press release from the office of Senator Kaine. For further information, direct inquiries to Mr Kaine's site.

Our health care providers sacrifice so much to care for us. Many have long struggled with burnout and mental health concerns, which for some became even more challenging after difficult experiences during the pandemic. We owe it to them to do what we can to protect their well-being.

That’s why I successfully pushed to pass my bipartisan Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act to reduce and prevent suicide, burnout, and mental and behavioral health conditions among health care professionals. The law is named in honor of Dr. Lorna Breen, a physician from Charlottesville, who was working on the front lines of the pandemic in New York and died by suicide in the Spring of 2020. It has provided $5.6 million in federal funding to support Virginia providers at UVA Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, and George Mason University.

But provisions of the law are set to expire at the end of this year.

That’s why I introduced the bipartisan Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Reauthorization Act to renew the law for another five years.

As a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, I’ll keep working to protect the well-being of our health care workforce, address shortages in the field, and help Virginians get high-quality care.

I look forward to keeping in touch and hearing about the issues that matter most to you. If you or a loved one need help with a federal agency, please reach out to a member of my staff here.
